Now that we have a cast on row (see previous post), it’s time to knit. My favorite online knitting instructions for beginners are from Jordana Paige but there are a ton of tutorials out there. If you don’t like Jordana’s as much as I did, find one that works for you via Google, or wait to get started in person at the next knit together.
Jordana’s instructions are found here
(To make things easier on yourself, ignore the Slip Knot and Cast On instructions and use the Long Tail Cast On from the previous post)
To practice knitting, try making Square One
Square One (Garter Stitch)
Cast on 16 stitches
Knit all rows, stopping to verify that you have 16 total stitches at the end of each row
Continue to knit until your piece is square and cast off
The directions to Cast Off can also be found on Jordana’s page.
If you would like to move on to purling, try making Square Two
Square Two (Stockinette Stitch with Garter Stitch Border)
Cast on 16 stitches
Knit 3 rows, stopping to verify that you have 16 total stitches at the end of each row
Row 4: Knit 3, Purl 10, Knit 3
Row 5: Knit all stitches
Alternate rows 4 and 5 until the center portion is square. (As you knit, you will see the center section become flat while the 3 knit stitches on each side create a border)
Knit 3 rows
Cast off
If this is gibberish to you or you just learn better by watching than reading, DON’T WORRY! Everything here can be learned in person at any knitting group. If you do give this a try and have questions, feel free to post them in the comments. I will post up pictures of the real squares when I get a chance.
